Havdalah הַבְדָּלָה, Meaning “separation” is a extrabiblical (not from the Biblical texts) ceremony that marks the end of Shabbat and ushers in the new week. It involves lighting a special havdalah candle (which you can also buy here on our website) that has several wicks, in addition the blessings of a cup of wine and smelling sweet spices. According to Jewish Tradition Shabbat ends on Saturday night after three stars appear in the sky.
The Spices are called besamim which is also the plural word for perfumes, are usually stored in a decorative spice container that is passed around so that everyone can smell the fragrance. Sometimes Sephardic or Mizrahi communities use branches of certain aromatic plants. The Ashkenazi (European) as well as most of traditional modern Israelis will likely use cloves.
